Intragastric Balloon
The intragastric balloon is a non-surgical procedure involving the placement of a specialised balloon inside the stomach to occupy space and reduce its food-carrying capacity. The procedure is temporary — the balloon is typically removed after 6 months.
A return visit is required approximately 6 months after placement for removal.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical procedure used in the treatment of obesity. It is typically considered for patients with a high BMI (commonly 40+) and works by reducing the stomach’s capacity.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia using small keyhole incisions. Approximately 75–80% of the stomach is removed, with the remaining portion stapled into a sleeve shape. Procedure time is typically 60–90 minutes.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)
Gastric bypass is considered a standard bariatric surgical procedure. A small stomach pouch of approximately 15–30 ml is created using stapling instruments and connected to the small intestine, bypassing the remainder of the stomach.
The procedure is performed laparoscopically through small incisions.
Who may be considered
Gastric bypass may be considered for people with a BMI of 40 or more, or those with a BMI of 35–39 with obesity-related health conditions including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Sleep apnoea
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
